MSNBC's Hall falsely claimed Clinton and Obama said Iraq surge is "working, so then why not stay longer?"

Summary: On MSNBC, anchor Tamron Hall claimed that Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are "both saying that the new strategy" in Iraq "is working," and later asked VoteVets.org's Jon Soltz whether it would hurt anti-war organizations' message "when you hear from ... the two leading candidates for president ... saying 'Hey, things are working, so then why not stay longer?' " But neither Clinton nor Obama has said that President Bush's troop increase strategy is "working," and neither has advocated "stay[ing] longer."

Contact MSNBC and tell them to give us the news, stop lying and stop telling us about why they hate FOX.

Remind Sue that while this post does take issue with an MSNBC anchor, it does mention Fox News anywhere.

ARGH! That's "Does NOT mention Fox News"

Pete

It is all related. If MSNBC spent more time doing correct research and realizing this is a lie instead of telling us why FOX news so bad in their 8 and 9pm time slots maybe they would not spead lies about Senator Clinton and her "Support of the surge" There is no support.

Thank you MMFA , because this lie has a life of its own and it keeps being told over and over again. The media does not know what is and what is not the truth.

I might be a little confused, too, but if the surge is 'working', then doesn't that mean we should be able to leave Iraq sooner?

The people who unquestioningly support Bush's surge are using it's success as an excuse for extending the war further.  I feel like if the surge is 'working' then violence is decreasing, and we are closer, not further from our goal of a stable Iraq.

Maybe I'm just confused about what constitutes success.  From a neo-con standpoint, success is measured by how many 'terrorists' we can capture or kill.  If the surge means we are killing more terrorists, then we should continue and increase the surge.  That way we can kill even more terrorists.  The longer we stay in Iraq, the more terrorists we can kill.

The problem is, the more 'terrorists' we kill, the more we create.  Oops...

Wow. Not only are they parroting something totally made up, but now they are adding words and drawing false conclusions.

Reminds me of that "telephone" game where you whisper a message that is passed down from person to person and when it gets to the last person, it no longer resembles what was originally said.

I believe that before you come on to voice your opinion,or host a Talk Show,  you need a minimum of 6 months with your "Boots on the ground!" That means going out on daily, night time patrols, ambushes, convoy duty etc...... just like the real reporters did in Viet Nam and previous wars!

There's too many of these wishy, washy talking heads out there, that need to pull their heads out of their collective arse's, and report from the battle-lines ! I don't mean a 18 hour fly over, after which , tea and crumpets, are served in the Green Zone!

Let's start with the Fox Network first, send every single one of them, for a six-month tour, no early outs, except for death or injury, and only can  they can come back, and report!

Wonder how many will piss their drawers full, on the flight over?

Or, virtually bring 'the tour' to them, in effect, where they reside.

Maybe Keith Olbermann will name Tamron Hall  "WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD"

Oh  never mind MSNBC is allowed to lie in the World of Olbermann , but if it were FOX News they would be labeled "WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD"

Does anyone remember when the surge started? The Republan mouthpieces and BushCo. where demanding that we wait until we get reports before starting to either criticize it or cheer it. As time went on, the Dems said fine...let's wait.  But at the first chance, the Republans shout from the roof tops (or bathroom stalls) that the SURGE IS WORKING and Bush is a genius. Fine, he is a genius. But as stated above, what does WORKING that mean...Victory.   Hell, the Dems should declare victory in Iraq per the concensus of the Repubs and vote funds to get the soldiers home. I am sure that all Repubs will agree.  And to ease the fear factor, we will set a trap for the terrorists who will follow us home.

Hall never said that Clinton said the "surge" is working as the mmfa title accuses her of doing.  She said that Clinton said the new "strategy" is working.  This is the same kind of word play that got mmfa to defend hillary against the likes of Drudge and the WaPo back when the story broke.  This is just an awful article and the headline should be corrected immediately.  She quoted Hillary fully and accurately and yet mmfa is still trying to somehow make Hillary out to be a victim.

Hillary AND Obama, but you make a good point. I agree.

Posted by eweston8542983

No she didn't quote Hillary accuratly. The interveiwie (Soltz) says she wasn't quoted accuratly. You say she was, prove it.

Proof is right above you in the article:

"

HALL: Well, Jon, though, I mean, you have to admit the strategy has changed and there are reports that the tactics are working. You even have Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama both saying that the new strategy is working. The quote from Sen. Clinton I have is: "We've begun to change the tactics in Iraq in some areas, particularly Anbar province, and it's working."

Posted by Computer in reply to Computer

That is a 100% accurate quote of what Hillary said.

Posted by mefirst in reply to Computer

no it's only less than 100% accurate because the rest of the quote is chopped off.

Posted by open_mind in reply to Computer

That's kind of funny because I didn't see the word "surge" in there.  I hope we can agree it is wrong to put words in other peoples' mouths.

Personally I believe the "surge" is playing a part in areas like Anbar where soldiers have been able to change their tactics due to greater manpower, but it is not clear as to whether Clinton was referring to that or whether these same tactics would not work without a "surge" either.

Hillary Clinton never said "things are working" in Iraq. She said the change in tactics in *some* areas are working. The implication from the talk show hosts is that Hillary and Obama think the current policy is working in Iraq, when they don't think that.

Posted by mefirst

even the white house says it's supposed to be only a "temporary surge".   scroll down to "myth 4" on this white house link.  they say bush does not want an indefinite stay.

It was John Kerry who ran on sending 40,000 more troops to Iraq. He suggested escalation first. Then the Dems funded the "surge". And the Dem plan, backed by Hillary and Obama, is to keep US troops in Iraq indefinitely to "fight terrorism" and are now whining that our little puppet government (that has no control outside the Green Zone and who's PM has complained he can't move even a company of "his" troops without US permission) isn't doing enough to stop the war they fund and wish to continue.

Funny how this "new" strategy is the same old one ALL the War Party members have been pushing since 2002 and are STILL pushing on BOTH sides of the aisle. No more Dems, no more Repubs = no more war!!!

I actually saw this segment.  This new MSNBC host appears to have either a very low IQ or poor reading comprehension skills.
