Fox News' Hill criticizes Clinton for leaving too large a tip, accuses her of "spending like a Learjet liberal"

On the November 9 edition of Fox News Live, host E.D. Hill said that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is "spending like a Learjet liberal on the campaign trail" because her campaign said it left a $100 tip for a $157 bill at a restaurant in Iowa, adding that the big tip "just plays into what people say about liberals." Hill also said, "You know what the rap is against the Democratic Party -- that it's out of touch with reality. It talks about the common man, but every time you look, there's [former Sen.] John Edwards [D-NC] getting a $400 haircut, or Senator -- Vice President [Al] Gore living in a house that consumes 20 times the energy of a regular house."

I LOVE this!!!

First they blast her for being too cheap and not leaving a tip at all, but when that was discredited, then they try to go after her for being TOO GENEROUS?!

For God's sake people, if you can't find anything REAL to be mad about HRC, stop being mad at her!

Furthermore, it's not outrageous to leave a large tip when one is a recognized personality, especially a political one. It can be a hassle for the staff to accommodate either a large group or one in which the staff has to constantly be on alert that onlookers won't bother them.

I was in a nightclub in Portland, Oregon one night when Jean Claude Van Damme showed up.  This was back when people still knew who he was, of course.  To make sure no drunken macho morons started any crap with him, the club insisted that he be surrounded by half their security staff the whole time he was there.  When a famous person shows up at a public place of business that normally does not cater to celebrities, it frequently is not business as usual.

Maybe Hillary wanted to show gratitude not only for the meal service, but any hassle that may have been incurred by the restaurant.

Posted by pete592

Oh Jesus tap dancin' Christ!

She's vilified for not tipping, now it's tipping too much.

What if she tipped 14.9 percent?  Would there still be a story here?

Posted by wzwriter in reply to pete592

What if she tipped 14.9 percent?  Would there still be a story here?

If she had tipped 14.9 percent, she would have tipped much better than Rachael Ray does on Food Network's "$40 a Day", and you NEVER hear anyone complain about Rachael's pitiful tipping record....

Posted by dave_chicago in reply to wzwriter

They would've said, "Here's this very, very rich woman, who supposedly cares about working people, and she leaves just an ordinary 15% tip?

Posted by Brabantio in reply to dave_chicago

Bush is an ignoramus, but that gives him a "down-to-earth" or "common man" reputation.  So that's good.

Giuliani is a belligerent ass, but he comes off as a tough guy, so that's good.

Romney flip-flops on social issues, but he has wide shoulders, so that's good.

Hillary leaves a generous tip for working people, well that's bad.

Thanks for clearing that up, o wise punditry.

Incidentally, the campaign made a big deal about the hundred-dollar tip because you idiots were making a story about her not leaving one at all.  It's not like they're issuing press releases every time they tip the pizza delivery guy.

Posted by SueEld in reply to pete592

It is another example of defocusing from the real issues. The waitress who said the press was crazy is my hero. Stupid story and full of lies

Because it's Hillary Clinton, there's NO CORRECT ANSWER!  Tip more than 20 percent?  big spending liberal.  Tip less than 20 percent (or as falsely reported in the first place, NO TIP AT ALL)?  Tightwad and cheapskate who cares about the poor and middle class as a concept, but has no interest in the plight of REAL working men and women.

If Hillary Clinton took out a calculator and figured EXACTLY 20 percent, she'd be called so concerned with her image that all she cared about was being technically in compliance with the unwritten social norms about tipping.

When a story like this gets ginned up by Drudge and the "reporters" at Fox and, the rest of the media goes along, the one thing you can count on is that it's a DEMOCRAT (usually a Clinton)  who will be trashed, and that no matter what he or she did or didn't do, it was wrong -- too high, too low, too much, too little, too whatever -- there's NO "just right."

Why is Fox News against the little guy who is just trying to make ends meet?

Posted by cpinva

next on fox news:

"hillary uses too much toilet paper when she takes a crap, film at 11"

Posted by HughG in reply to cpinva

Meanwhile, on CNN:

"Clinton only uses 2 squares of toilet paper. Is she hygienic enough to be president? What about her elitist disdain for the working people who make toilet paper? This is obviously a calculation that she and Bill have been planning since 1992."

Justice and Truth in the USA - Fact Check:

E.D. HILL is an outstanding and award winning reporter -

E.D. Hill

Tuesday, November 06, 2007

E.D. Hill joined FOX News Channel (FNC) in March of 1998. Hill currently anchors "America's Pulse" from 2 - 3 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. Previously, Hill hosted "FOX News Live" from 11 a.m. - Noon ET. She also co-hosts Bill O'Reilly's "Radio Factor." Previously, Hill was a co-host on the FOX News Channel's morning show, "FOX & Friends" since 1999.

Before joining FNC, Hill was a contributing reporter for ABC News' "Good Morning America" from 1995 to 1998 covering family issues. Before that, she served as the morning and noon anchor for ABC's flagship station in New York, WABC-TV.

Prior to WABC-TV, Hill was WHDH-TV's (NBC-Boston, MA) midday news anchor, where she won a local EMMY Award for Outstanding News Special. Earlier in her career, Hill served as a business anchor for CBS Morning News and CBS Radio Network and was the anchor for WPXI-TV's (NBC-Pittsburgh, PA) evening newscasts.

A graduate of University of Texas and mother of eight children, Hill is also the recipient of a Golden Quill Award for live spot news reporting.

============================================

And, of course, she is a babe-0-licious beauty!

Care to comment on what she said here, DerailthreadUS?

I think justytroothy was making a comment on the absurdity of a mother of eight criticizing the excesses of another person.

I do understand the righty media's concern with this generous tip.If everybody starts tipping like this, waitresses and dishwashers will start moving into their neighborhoods, and they may be forced to speak to working people while walking the dog. Yikes!

And Billiybob, the babe-o-licious thing with the Repube skanks is really tipping your hand. ;0)

I wonder if we'll ever see the thrice married, twice divorced Hill try to preach about Clinton's marriage?

Oh, and here's a FACT CHECK for JT:

E.D. Hill is the mother of 5 children, and stepmother to 3.  Still a supermom, but not on the level JT leads us to believe.

Posted by roundhouse in reply to pete592

JT needs to double check his RNC talking points. According to the RNC talking points memo, a la Rush Limbaugh, working mothers are selfish, anti-family values detriments to patriarchal Christian He Man bread winners.

All working moms do is drive down wages for the mighty white male, stifle the ability of men to lord over the household and make of the workplace a den of PC sensitivity and unearned equality. A haven of affirmative action quotas, if you will.

Oh, wait. JT must win at all costs and propagate the GOP message of the day, so it's alright for him to champion the dignity of working moms...at least, that is, until he's instructed to attack HRC as bad mom because she's a career woman.

I'll be waiting in rapt anticipation for his next RNC sactioned talking points bulletin.

Posting her resume really helps bring perspective to this latest bit of Fox News comedy, not to mention your aesthetic assessment. Thank you!

You forgot to mention this, but it's probably not that important:  Thrice married, twice divorced.

Of course, her impressive credentials really prepared her for the real">[link to mediamatters.org] journalism of Fox News.

Posted by juliajayne in reply to pete592

Sorry to sound so conservative, but I'd be more impressed if E.D. Hill had the good judgement to pick a good mate and stick with him and not subject her kids to 3 daddies. I'd also be more impressed with E.D. Hill if she were to have better judgement than working with Bill O'Reilly. I'd say something has gone awry in her life that she has been bucked down to the lowest excrement on the TV to make a living. Her resume does not impress me in the least. As I've mentioned before, titular authority and degrees do not impress me, nor do I beleive those things impress most liberals. I don't equate having an education with having intellect, though the two are obviously not mutually exclusive. But having intellect requires powers of reasoning and assessment beyond mere facts, especially made up facts used at Fox. Or the tortured logic used at same.

Because that's what REALLY matters, isn't it?

The Waitress at the Restaraunt was right. This is nuts! And its not just Faux Noise in on the act either. If this is the kind of stupidity that we're gonna get from the MSM, then its going to be a long campaign season.

I mean, even NPR jumped on  this story. I expect this kind of junk reporting from Faux but NPR? Unbelievable.

What a surprise, NOT!  Hillary Clinton, as with so many Ds that would tax those who make a decent living, out of business, the rich SOBs, couldn't be honest if honesty were slapping them in the face!

I'm an "i", small "I".  I think that the Ds and Rs are both so damn disingenuous  they'd sell most Americans down the river just to keep their political jobs intact, and be able to continue to exert their power.

I've always tipped well, because my first jobs in my life were working in the Service Industries.   When I started my own business, and found myself making in the low hundreds of thousands, I never stopped tippping big, because I knew what it meant to work for a living, counting on tips to carry you through.

Hillary Clinton tips big because she is a disingenuous "Rhymes with Witch" who is buying her votes on the backs of hard working Americans.  She, and her cohort in political crime, Billy, don't give a damn about Americans, they give a damn ONLY about what they can scam out of Americans.

May they both rot in hell.

Posted by mari2j

You can always tell when someone is really doing well.  It drives the Republican stand-ins crazy so they have to resort to this sort of garbage.  One good thing about this election cycle.  Even a lot of Republicans and most Independents will vote for the Democrat no matter who it is that gets the nomination.  We all expect the "swift-boating" to continue.  Really it is almost encouraging since they only try a smack down when they are real worried about winning.  Sorry all you Publicans, IT WILL NOT WORK THIS TIME.

Posted by carlileb5935 in reply to mari2j

I hope you're right, but I dunno.Just wait until we start seeing the "no married couples" campaign signs going up. These kind of tactics work, unfortunately, because most people are stupid.

Does Hill tip her servers ? How much ? If she publicly questions philantropism of others, the door is open to be scrutinized herself.

I'll take the blue pill, now, please.

I wonder if E.D. Hill was equally appalled that Condi was shoe shopping at Feragamo's while Katrina was killing Americans in New Orleans. Maybe Hill should do some investigative reporting on the size of Brownie's tip for the steak dinner he was enjoying while Katrina was laying waste to New Orleans.

Heckuva job Foxies!

The goal of Fox News is to discredit Hillary Clinton on a daily basis. The Fox News suits are supporting Rudy Giuliani for president. News Corporation has past business dealings with Giuliani.

Hey Roger! What don't you tell the good people who you are supporting for president?

I hope a federal investigation is launched against Fox Newx.

Posted by roundhouse in reply to FNC Liberal

Is Fox supporting Giuliani because of Robertson or is Robertson supporting Giuliani because of Fox?

I guess it doesn't matter. The Fox message is inextricably linked to the Christian right.

If the Repugnicants need to lies or half truths about such idiotic and inconsequential matters such as a large tip Hilary might leave (first they accused her of leaving none - a lie, then she left TOO MUCH!), what Edwards personally pays for a haircut, or the amount of electricity Gore uses for his house that means they realize they are in very serious trouble!

Hillary's tipping policy is her own personal business and maybe she just felt sorry about how hard the waitress had to work with the sizable party Hillary brought to lunch. In case the Repukes aren't aware, Hillary and Bill have made some very serious money since leaving the White house - book deals, speaking engagements, etc, something many or the Repukes do when out of office like Papa Bush getting more than one hundred thousand a shot for giving speeches honoring, aiding and abetting The Rev Sun Yeong Moon, a South Korean convicted criminal, and lending his presidential prestige to the turd. The Rev Sun Yeong Moon is of Moonies infamy and still uses his followers as slaves to generate income for the "church", a criminal who got caught doing illicit deals with the North Koreans, (against US law at the time), who claims he is the next Jesus here on earth, who is the owner of several Repukican propaganda arms, the Washington Times being only one of them, or the millions Poppi made while "employed" with the Carlyle Group which used Poppi Bush's influence and connections while having him entertain and provide huge sums of Carlyle money to his friends the Saudi Royals including Bendar "Bush" as young Georgie used to call him when he came to visit at the Bush's home when Bush the idiot was young, and the Bin Laden family of Islamofascists among others. (do we really need to ask why the Bin Laden Family was allowed to escape the US directly after 9/11, within two days afterward, without the FBI even being allowed to question them and no other air traffic permitted anyone at the time they were allowed to leave?) .

What Hillary tips is her own business. Large tips to working class people who are known not to make all that much money demonstrate that the givers of such tips are not out of step at all with the hard working class but appreciate the position they might be in. Maybe they have compassion! I wonder if Bush the idiot or Poppi Bush tip at all or just think that those who work hard in order to serve them should just do so for the "honor" of working so hard for them?

Next, what John Edwards pays for haircuts himself is likewise no Repuke's business. It does not involve government money. Edwards, who is not on any kind of government expense account is a self-made multi-millionaire who, although coming from lower middle class roots, has made a great success of himself while actually making his money legally, and, my god!, in the private sector! - outside of government service - and unlike many of the Repukes that are criticizing his haircut expenses, Edwards pays his own way! How many Repukes have criticized Bush the idiot's suits which cost several thousand dollars each, and at government expense, not his own! Even then, he still looks like a god damn chimp in them! Waste of taxpayers' money!

Posted by ImpeachBushNow

I haven't ever heard any of the Repigs, their talking mouth propaganda spreaders (sort of exactly like manure spreaders), or their repugnant acolytes mentioning the huge amount of pro bono work Evans has habitually and continually done to help those who were worthy but who couldn't afford his standard fees.

Finally, whatever Gore pays for electricity for his mansion is likely far less than the amount the government pays for the upkeep at the idiot Bush's ranch which, by the way, the government paid millions more for its complete renovation just as they did for Poppi Bush's house in Kennebunkport, Maine. By the way, the electricity for Gore's house is supplied by the Tennessee Valley Authority (because it is in the area served by the TVA, which generates electricity using hydroelectric power. NO POLUTION! NO CARBON FUELS! Completely regenerable! Hydroelectricity does not use fossil fuels but rather water power to generate electricity. But even then, Gore pays the expenses on his home by himself, unlike the chimp or Poppi Bush (or it seems some of the GOP congressional members who like the bozo in Alaska, Sen. Ted Stevens, infamous for the "bridge to nowhere", a humongous pork grab which did indeed get funded by the Repig rubber stamp congress before they lost the majority. Sen. Ted Stevens had had his home built by an Alaska oil company and is now under investigation by the FBI for receiving bribes for doing so.

Both Bush the idiot and Bush the senile could have saved the government many millions of dollars each by using the Summer White House at Camp David as Clinton and Eisenhower did instead of bilking the government to the tune of millions to renovate their properties which they get to keep - with the government never getting reimbursement.

Only the rich would ever criticize such a thing, the people who never worked in the restaurant business.

Hillary is a putz anyway for supporting the NAFTA-style Peru trade agreement.

But this brand of class warfare from Fox just obviates the fact that R's don't give a damn about working people and poor people. You know who I'm talking about, the most vulnerable among us, the kind of people who are a paycheck or two away from destitution.

Republicans give the big ole middle finger to working people. They worship at the alter of a rigged market that devalues labor by outsourcing and off-shoring good paying, worker protecting union jobs while simultaneously fighting tooth and nail against living wage campaigns. Shameless.

Seriously, screw Republicans (before they screw you).

Well the whole story was brought up by the NPR so start where the blame should be please. (I believe you just told us to tell media outlets when they report wrongly).   I did not see the NPR included in your column.  I believe the media are getting an awakening about Hillary and everyone is trying to blame it on the newscasters.  Maybe they are aware of something you are not!  We had a lot of time to know Hillary and Bill I believe there are other candidates running that would not be afraid of the enemy or need someone to bail them out.

The shallowness of the Fox experience is getting ever shallower.

First it's pap about Hillary not tipping then leaving too big a tip which all connects to Edward's haircut and Gore's electric bill because every expenditure by liberals is approved through the Democratic National Committee for Tips, Haircuts and Electric Bills.

All right, Fox pundits, please submit a list of tipping policies and haircut costs and electricity bills that is in keeping with Republican standards. OK. I'll do it for you:

TIPS: Democrats are evil.HAIRCUTS: Democrats are evil.ELECTRICITY BILLS: Democrats are evil.

That was a lot more work for me to compile than Fox News since "Democrats are evil" is just one key on the Fox News computers.

This also happened when she was campaigning for Slick Willy. She and a group had a meal at a restaurant and left no tip. When it hit the news she sent the waitress a $25 savings bond. This woman is dangerous. She lies with ease and cares nothing about America. She wants open borders even tho terrorists are also pouring thru them. They aren't going to build that fence . They are waiting for her to get elected and start the NAU plan

Posted by solon in reply to legs16008682

This didnt happen HERE. They left a tip. The rightwing lied about it. I wont say Hillary is honest but compared to Bush who lies like the sun rises she is the equivelent of George Washington. Your talking points are weak. Hillary is far from dangerous. She is so careful and middle of the road that no real liberal I know is excited about her. Nice repitition of Limborg talking points though.

I don't understand Hillary tipped a waitress $157 and this makes her a bad person? As someone who has worked for tips as a pizza delivery driver I can tell you I would love to be so abused.

I now myself regularly pride myself on overtipping. I tip the chinese food guy $50 and gave the woman who cuts my hair $75. That shows class in my view. But just in case those of you who have not worked for tips don't know no I don't consider a big tip an insult. Actually I would think less of someone like Hilary if she didn't tip that well.

Posted by sbgypsy4666

When a politician uses a restaurant for a photo op, they pretty much take up the whole place for an hour or so - good on HC for making up the money that the waitresses would have earned had she not been there that day!

And bad on all these stoopid talking heads that think this is what voters want to know about our presidential choices!

You know, I'm a news junkie and from time to time I purposely tune into to Fox in the morning when MSN goes to commercial.

This particular Fox comedian is toxic. There's something wrong with her.

When she was on Fox and Friends, the other two guys acted like they were on a double-date with the bitchiest, most high-strung girl in school, but she was rumored to "put out" so they tolerated her illogical rambling and hyperventilations because her skirt would ride up her legs when she got excited.

In Utah, the so-called reddest state (it's because the rest of us are so embarassed, our collective blush colors the whole state!) we can recognize that kind of 50's morals because we put women on a pedestal...so we can gaze upwards at their undergarments.

Hillary tipped, she didn't tip, she tipped, she over-tipped...and Fox still houses the biggest lying, hypocritical bags of slightly warmed-over air on television. E.D. Hill couldn't carry Hillary's handbag. It's difficult to hear the message when the story is told by someone who ranks absolutley rock-bottom in credibility.

It's like George W. Bush giving advice on how to enlist in the military.
