NBC's Todd on McCain's Al Qaeda-Iran "gaffe": "[H]ad Clinton or Obama done something like this, this would have been played on a loop, over and over"

Summary: On MSNBC Live, while discussing Sen. John McCain's false claim that Iranian operatives are "taking al-Qaeda into Iran, training them and sending them back," NBC News political director Chuck Todd asserted: "[T]his was not a one-time slip and ... had Clinton or Obama done something like this, this would have been played on a loop, over and over."

Of course, he's right. Rush Limbaugh would use it as proof that the Democrats aren't ready to be commander in chief.

My guess is that it will receive little attention outside MSNBC or the Daily Show. The Talk Radio Troglodytes will pretend it never happened.

Is this misinformation or just an MMFA high five to Todd?

Posted by dbeden4153 in reply to tommy

I think it serves to highlight McCain's virtual pass in the media right now...that he can come out and say something crazy like that, and no one seems to pay attention.

Posted by shoes89 in reply to dbeden4153

dbeden4153; "I think it serves to highlight McCain's virtual pass in the media right now ..."

Are you serious? Has any candadate in history ever gotten a bigger pass than Barack Obama?

If John McCain's pastor had said what Rev. Wright said, the MSM would have had a HUMUNGOUS FIT like no other ever seen in history. (Look what they did to Trent Lott and Don Imus). McCain would have been forced to withdraw from the race, and the GOP would be wondering what on earth to do about finding a new nominee.

Also ... MM's post actually spotlights liberal media bias. Yet another analyst, Chuck Todd, shows that he is in the tank for the Democrats and exemplifies again how the media has a widespread and passionate  bias in favor of the Dems.

Posted by Col. Harlan Sanders in reply to shoes89

Shoes, you're into that territory with a bunch of question marks, "would have"s and "would be"s. Got anything that really happened?

Posted by philib in reply to Col. Harlan Sanders

Umm, did you notice mmfa whining (on a loop?) about McCain? 5 of the 11 headlines at mmfa for wednesday is another loop being played over and over again. Mmfa whines and whines about McCain then complains that "if" another shoe had been worn the democrats would be unrealistically scrutinized.

I agree with Tommy, mmfa is the loop. Covering no misinformation

Posted by BottleBlonde in reply to philib

What happened was a variety of media sources failed in their responsibilities.

Every time they did that, Media Matters covered it.

The loop is not their fault. They would be shirking their obligation if they allowed one media source to make flawed statements about John McCain, but didn't call out the others who made that same error or omission.

Posted by Col. Harlan Sanders in reply to BottleBlonde

Thanks, Bottleblond, for taking on the inevitable daily explanation of that seemingly simple concept.Who's got tomorrow? Volunteers?

Posted by mari2j in reply to shoes89

Nah not true at all.  John McCain suddenly claimed membership in North Phoenix Baptist Church when he started to run as the CONSERVATIVE he claims to be.  Only thing he was never baptized and is definately NOT a Baptist.  Actually here is a list of Episcapalians in the U S Senate.  Episcopalian  - Evan Bayh,  Saxby Chambliss, Chuck Hagel,  Kay Bailey Hutchison, Blanche Lincoln, John McCain, Bill Nelson, Ted Stevens, Sheldon Whitehouse. Look the guy even lies about his Church affiliation to suck it up to the Conseratives.  he haqs no character or he is just naturally so confused he does not even know what Church he belongs to.

Posted by shoes89 in reply to mari2j

John McCain didn't "suddenly announce" any such thing.

Unlike Obama, McCain doesn't claim to be overtly religious.

Posted by solon in reply to shoes89

Has any candidate in history gotten as big a pass as Obama? OF COURSE. George W Bush. He got WAY more of a pass. His almost constant lying was hardly mentioned. His failed business career was swept under the rug. His basic stupidity was glossed over. Appologies were made everytime he said something so stupid it made my head spin. Yeah. Gump got the biggest pass of any candidate EVER.

Posted by DBT-hype in reply to solon

Bush has not had a pass.  He seems to be the most scritinized president on this site and if any of the things you said where true then I'm sure it would have had the media attention it deserved.

Posted by Col. Harlan Sanders in reply to DBT-hype

"Bush ... seems to be the most scritinized president on this site ..."- DBT-hype

Well, I'm pretty sure he's the only president, of this country at least. It follows that he would be "scritinized" more than the other, non-existent presidents.

Posted by captfoster2 in reply to tommy

TOMMY,

Come on man.... your better than that?

The misinformation is the way the issue is being presented and Todd is defending against by the 'interviewers' skewing/ignoring/changing of some of the facts. MMFA is just pointing many of them out about this whole issue.....

If the end results in a high five to Todd from MMFA, then so be it and good for him!

Posted by tommy in reply to captfoster2

Well, considering at the bottom right of this page highlighted in sunny yellow is the urging "Speak out about the mess at MSNBC"........it is a little confusing around here at times.

Are we to include this assertion by Todd in that "mess" at MSNBC, or not? I was askin'......

Posted by filkertom in reply to tommy

I would think absolutely, yes.  The point is not exactly obscure: If the sound bite would've been played on a loop if it was said by Obama or Clinton, why isn't it being played on a loop when it was said by McCain...?

Or, in terms we're all far too familiar with, IOKIYAR.

Posted by hogprint in reply to tommy

Oh, I'd say a big ol' pat on the butt to Todd...

Remember Tommy we're reminded on a daily basis about the MISSSION STATEMENT of MMfA.

I guess that only applies to us right of center posters!

Posted by BottleBlonde in reply to tommy

This is a Media Matters high five to Todd, just like they have done for Keith Olbermann and others before.

When others echo their sentiments, they sometimes highlight that info.

Posted by nerzog

By the way..... what the hell is Douchebag Liebermann doing campaigning with Gramps McCan't? Why doesn't he just switch parties already?

Posted by Col. Harlan Sanders in reply to nerzog

Nerz, I don't think either of them know which party they're in most days. They may have thought they were getting on a Vegas gambling junket bus when they started this trip.

If you listen carefully to the clip where Lieberman's whispering in McSame's ear, you can hear him advising JM not to fill up on bread at the buffet.

Posted by wookie in reply to nerzog

He's a Fox News Democrat. His job is to imply that even Democrats love Mr Bomb Bomb Iran.

Posted by nerzog in reply to wookie

Now there's a thought. Instead of looping outrageous things said by people who support the candidates, lets play things the candidates THEMSELVES have said.... what a concept! In the name of fairness, every time they play one of Wright's clips, they should play McCan't singing "Bomb Bomb Iran".

Posted by worrierking in reply to nerzog

Here's a picture of both Senators taken in Iraq yesterday.

Notice Joe whispering in the Maverick's ear.

I'm happy to report that WGN here in Chicago did include the video in it's morning news loop.  I saw it like 4 times just while I was getting ready for work this morning.

Posted by tommy in reply to atheist

It is not being ignored as perhaps this website would like some to believe, I saw it three times on CNN last night.

Todd may have a point, but I think it goes more to the media's fixation on Obama and Clinton, and their apathetic disinterest at the moment for McCain - than any devious bias.

Posted by dazedandconfused26 in reply to tommy

Its all about ratings, no one wants to hear about Gramps, that part is decided, boring.

Posted by iowalib in reply to tommy

It's unfortunate the media aren't more interested in McCain. I think the more air time he gets, the better for Democrats. Can't wait for the debates.

Posted by Kyle_Broflovski in reply to iowalib

Oh, man, I can't wait for the debates!!

I hope Old Flipflop McSame's all stocked up on prune juice, because Obama is gonna eat his lunch!!

Of course, the Fox News repubs will still think McSame won, Obama tends to use a lot of big words that Fox news repubs can't understand.  (like 'oversight' and 'accountability')

Posted by werner

I agree with Todd whom mmfa has cited for misinformation in the past if my memory is good.

Posted by congero6189599

What is really upsetting about this clip is, the host MB portrays this recent lie by McCain as a single slip of the tongue later to be corrected by Todd that he also repeated this lie several times on a earlier radio show. This was no slip of the tongue but a blatant lie told to pander support for his candidacy that is tied hook and line to the Iraq war.  Al-Queda is Sunni,Iran is 90% Shia and helped us to fight and overthrow the Sunni Taliban and Al-Queda in Afghanistan, McCain is either ignorant of this or just playing us for fools thinking he could get away with this blantant propaganda. McCain was attempting to play the scare card of Iran to continue Bushs illegal and immoral war in Iraq in the same way the Bush administration used it before being exposed in August by the NIE report that said Iran had abandoned is nuclear program fice years ago.  This leads to my second point, of Todd somehow claiming that McCain has some foreign policy expereince that has generated capital to buffer him against mistakes.  This is trully ridiculous given the previous lies and misstatements he has made about Iraq documented hear and at carpetbaggers.com, ThinkProgress.com,Josh Marshall and talkingPoints.com to name a few,the only capital he has is with these very pundits and McCains media "barbeque" friends who have created it. The real "straght" talk is that Iraq had no waepons of mass destruction and the President and his whole administration lied to us about it. No connection between Saddam and Al-Queda according to unpublicized but recently released Pentagon report examing thousands of pages of captured Iraqi documents .  But the chorus of lies incessantly spewed by this administration were hungrily swalloed and regurgitated by the likes of Mika B., Todd and others who now give McCain foreign policy capital. Our strategy is wrong in Iraq and in the Middle East and no amount of tactical cosmetics  will make this pig beautiful.  We need  break with the policies and lies that have cost us and the world so much in treasure and ideals long held. The lie McCain told only promises more of the same and much more, and what is telling is how readily the media is willing to repeat the misstakes of the past.

Posted by nerzog in reply to congero6189599

Yeah, but, see..... covering that story would be HARD. It's much easier to play back to back loops of Obama's preacher saying something stupid. If you got paid millions of dollars a year to do something easy, why would you want to do something hard?

Posted by kromecom48

I love Chuck Todd. In a world of partisan news I have no idea where this guy's sentiments lie. He's old school objective punditry --which means he's probably more liberal since the truth has a liberal bias. Todd was a great "get" for NBC (and a loss for Brian Lamb over at C-Span and Washington Journal). Tweety and Fist-Face Russert should take lessons from this guy.

Posted by draftedin68

Ohh Mika, Mika, Mika....

So, it was just a "...little slip of the tongue" you say?

Yeah, just like one of those "little slips" from the collection of Ronnie (makes-new-friends-everyday) Reagan.

BTW, good on you, Chuck Todd.

This is a great example of the strong corporate media bias...

which the Democrats must face every election.  The Dems are hounded, scrutinized and badgered all the way.  The press is constantly looking for new ways to drag them down.

While the flip-flopping, Bush suck-up just waltzes along.  The media paves the way for him.

John McLame

Great work here by Media Matters.

I'm so confused...I thought the media was Liberal, giving breaks to anyone other than a Republican/Conservative. I mean, that is correct, right?

Then Pillsbury Limbaugh taught me that they are the Mainstream Media. If that's true, and our country is split down the middle thanks to the "Uniter," much of what goes on is as much Republican-leaning favoritism as Democrat, right?

Then, I'm told that it's the Drive-By Media that hits and runs without telling the whole story. Just sensationalist crap.

And, finally, it's no longer a secret that most media outlets in our country are owned and operated by huge, cavernous corporations. And who owns those corporations, kiddies?

That's right, Republicans like Rupert Murdock or former GE dude Jack Welch or any of the rest of them, really.

I think it's safe to say that PBS and NPR aren't owned by Republicans. That's why the Repugs fear and loathe them like shadows in the night.

Larry King, bless his wrinkled old self, said it best: "The media aren't liberal or conservative...they're carnivorous! They eat their own!"

Since Clinton and Obama are splashing around and attracting all sorts of attention, the predators begin closing in and circling for a kill.

McCain can't get arrested; he's running so flat on the media radar.

And, it's ratings, not journalism, at the end of the day.

Even this correction ignores the flub of equating al-Qaida in Iraq with al-Qaida proper. They are two different and distinct groups. (The al-Qaida in Iraq is al-Qaida in Iraq. Al-Qaida barely has a presence in Iraq.)
