With Obama's VP selection, Kristol now concerned with Democratic Party's "gender equity"

Summary: Bill Kristol characterized Sen. Barack Obama's selection of Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate as "Obama's imposition of a glass ceiling." But Kristol showed little concern for "gender equity" in the Democratic Party when he said during the primary that "[w]hite women are a problem" and attributed Sen. Hillary Clinton's New Hampshire primary victory to her "pretend[ing] to cry."

In an August 23 blog post on Sen. Barack Obama's selection of Sen. Joe Biden as his vice-presidential running mate, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol wrote: "[Sen.] Hillary [Clinton] can perform the attacking functions of the VP nominee as well as Biden." He added, "Will the Democratic party, which is committed (to say the least) to gender equity, and which in fact has a 50 percent quota for female delegates, accept Obama's imposition of a glass ceiling at its convention?" But Kristol wasn't professing concern for "gender equity" in the Democratic Party when on the February 3 edition of Fox News Sunday, he said the only people supporting Clinton's presidential campaign were "the Democratic establishment and white women." He also said that "it would be crazy for the Democratic Party to follow an establishment that's led it to defeat year after year" and added, "White women are a problem, that's, you know -- we all live with that." Nor was Kristol touting Clinton when he attributed Clinton's victory in the New Hampshire primary to "the tears," saying, "She pretended to cry; the women liked it." When Brit Hume asked "You think she pretended?" Kristol responded, "I do." Hume replied, "I don't." Kristol added, "The women were sorry for her, and she won."

Think Progress blogger Matthew Yglesias reported on Kristol's post in an August 24 post.
